RSSFeed Kirby Fri, 16 Nov 2018 00:00:00 +0000 Mickey Thompson a Big Winner in Las Vegas news/mickey-thompson-a-big-winner-in-las-vegas 2018-11-16 Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels rolled through the recent SEMA Show in style, earning awards and a bevy of new fans at the annual everything-automotive trade show in Las Vegas.

Located in the lower level of the South Hall, our desert-inspired booth was packed the entire week with customers and media wanting to learn more about the full lineup of Mickey Thompson and Dick Cepek products. That includes the new Baja Boss and Baja Pro X tire lines, which made big first impressions.

Perry Mack of 4WD Magazine in Canada selected the Baja Pro X as his Global Media Award winner for 2018, while Australians Simon Christie of 4wd TV and Ben Davidson of Jeep Action Magazine did the same for the Baja Boss. The Baja Pro X was also runner-up in the tire and related product category for the SEMA Best New Product Award.

SEMA is the place to see the finest project vehicles in the business, including plenty sporting Mickey Thompson and Dick Cepek tires and wheels. Highlights included the Code Red 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited Rubicon and Baja Boss aggressively styled Ford F-250 Super Crew off-roaders in the M/T booth, as well as high-profile OEM cars such as the all-electric Chevrolet eCOPO Camaro, 50th anniversary Mustang Cobra Jet and Leah Pritchett’s factory Mopar Pro Stock racer, all featuring M/T ET Drag radials.

The Mickey Thompson booth was a must-stop for show-goers. Team M/T gave away 3,000 T-shirts to attendees who watched a video presentation for the Baja Boss, invited customers to build a custom 4x4 vehicle with the M/T Interactive Garage kiosk, and hosted sponsored athletes Brian and Hailie Deegan, Jimmy Fitzpatrick and Destin Cantrell for a special autograph signing session on Tuesday.

“SEMA 2018 was a great show for Mickey Thompson,” said Ken Warner, Vice President of Marketing. “It’s always important to connect with our current and future customers, and even at such a huge event, our company definitely stood out.

Go anywhere: Mickey Thompson’s new experimental tire is designed to tackle any terrain news/go-anywhere-mickey-thompsons-new-experimental-tire-is-designed-to-tackle-any-terrain 2018-10-29 The experimental Baja Pro X tire is on track to be the most aggressive off-road tire ever released by the company, and will join its comprehensive line up of truck and SUV tires including the popular Deegan 38, Baja MTZ p3 and Baja ATZ p3.

The Baja Pro X is for off-road use only, due in part to new design elements such as the sticky compound and innovative Treadbiter™ cleats which make the tire too aggressive for street use. While still in development, the Baja Pro X model takes Mickey Thompson’s proven off-road tires to new heights with exclusive attributes and durability not found anywhere else. The size used for development is a 43X14.50-17LT.

Features include:

• Sticky compound provides the ultimate grip on hard surfaces.
• Pro-Tech Construction™ adds extra flexabilty while maintaining durability.
• Dual Decoupling Grooves™ provide additional flexibility on irregular surfaces.
• Treadbiter™ cleats provide extra biting edges across the tread for added traction.
• Serrated tread-regions indicate where pattern can be hand cut to allow for additional mud and loose surface traction while maintaining lateral stability & grip
• Mud scoops supply added cleaning power.
• Massive Sidebiters® and angled shoulder scallops provide the ultimate traction and grip.
• Symmetric directional tread pattern provides excellent traction and cleaning power.

“We designed the Baja Pro X for extreme outdoor use: rock bouncing, mud bogging, deep mud, rock, snow, sand, dirt and gravel,” said Jason Moulton, Senior Product Development Manager for Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels. “They can handle it all—and probably a few uses we haven’t even thought of yet.”

Mickey Thompson was an innovator and product pioneer who developed the first 35-inch-tall truck tire for off-road use. He created “tread-on-the-sidewall” tires for traction and pulling power in extreme conditions. Today, Mickey Thompson’s off-road tires are developed and designed with uncompromising standards and deliver undisputed performance.

LIKE A BOSS news/like-a-boss 2018-10-29 Prepare to dominate the trail with the new Baja Boss 3-ply Extreme Mud tire line from Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels, coming March 2019.

Aggressive, in-your-face styling meets serious trail performance in an ultra-premium Extreme Mud Terrain tire that features deep, wide voids and the company’s PowerPly XD 3-ply sidewall construction for maximum traction in hostile environments.

“We’re pleased to unleash the Baja Boss for the most demanding off-road applications,” said Ken Warner, Vice President of Marketing Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels. “With additional sizes for today’s leveled and lifted truck applications, the Baja Boss is an aggressive, high-impact tire that definitely ups the cool factor of any 4x4.”

The Baja Boss will be available in 18 high load-carrying capacity sizes from 17 to 24 inches for a variety of light truck and SUV models—with 18 additional sizes coming later — a soft-asymmetrical tread pattern design gives the Baja Boss the look and feel of an off-road beast.

Meanwhile, PowerPly XD technology improves handling and puncture resistance and enhances sidewall durability, while the large four-pitch Sidebiters® pattern provides additional off-road traction.

Features include:

• Soft-Asymmetric Tread Pattern Design: Reduces noise, improves handling and on-center feel, and reduces side-slip.
• Deep & Wide Voids: Enhance off-road traction and forward bite with a functional, aggressive appearance.
• Stone Ejector Ribs: Prevent stones being wedged into tread grooves, reduce stone retention, and help resist stone drilling.
• Angled Shoulder Scallops: Designed for ultimate traction and self-cleaning ability, they guide mud and loose soil out of the tread pattern with exposed trailing elements for larger biting edges.
• Mud Scoops: Provide a concave surface for mud traction and help create a void to prevent mud from clinging to the elements.
• Silica-Reinforced Compound: Provides on-road tread wear, cut and chip resistance, and improved wet handling and braking performance.
• Black Sidewall Lettering: Deep embossed and chamfered.

“With aggressive sizing and load ranges developed for today’s popular and extreme leveled/lifted applications, the Baja Boss is ready for any adventure,” Warner notes. “Off-roaders are going to fall in love with this tire’s looks, performance and adaptability to any terrain, and we invite everyone to stop by our booth at the SEMA Show to see just what the Baja Boss line is all about.”

Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Cobra Jet features Mickey Thompson tires news/mickey-thompson-cobra-pr 2018-10-29 Ford Performance has chosen Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels to provide tires for the 50th Anniversary Mustang Cobra Jet turnkey race car.

Only 68 limited-edition 50th Anniversary Mustang Cobra Jet models will be produced, paying homage to the car’s 1968 debut at the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, California, where it began its long history of winning and setting records.

The Ford Performance engineering team behind the 50th Anniversary race car sought to develop the quickest and most powerful Mustang Cobra Jet to ever leave the factory. That’s why the automaker turned to the experts at Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels to procure high quality tires.

As a result, Mickey Thompson’s 26.0/4.0-15 M/T ET DRAG Front “skinnys” (part #30071) and 30.0/9.0R15 ET DRAG Pro Drag Radials (part #3066R) will be standard equipment for the car.

“Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels has a long history of working with racing legends,” said Dominick Wycoff, President of Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels. “We’re elated and honored to add Ford’s 50th Anniversary Mustang Cobra Jet to that list. The car’s legacy on the strip speaks for itself.”

Mickey Thompson’s tires are part of a high-performance package developed by Ford to help the Mustang Cobra Jet top 150 mph, while blazing the quarter-mile in the mid-8-second range.

Ford Performance contacted Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels after testing its tires on the Mustang Cobra Jet during research and development. Current Mustang Cobra Jet owners also weighed in, favoring Mickey Thompson tires when polled by Ford Performance.

“Mustang Cobra Jet owners make a habit of placing their faith in the best products and materials on the market,” said Tom Kundrik, Motorsports Manager of Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels. “Ford put us to the test and Mickey Thompson tires were proven to be the fastest and most consistent among the tires they tested on the strip. Many championship racers have come to rely on our ET Drag Pro Drag Radials for better elapsed times and reliable performance on the drag strip.”

The 50th Anniversary Mustang Cobra Jet is the first original equipment vehicle to leave the factory with Mickey Thompson tires.

The Mickey Thompson ET Drag Pro Drag Radial allows for less rolling resistances, provides zero growth for predictable gear ratios and works best with auto transmission vehicles.

The 50th Anniversary Mustang Cobra Jet is powered by a special 5.2-liter version of Ford’s famed 5.0-liter V-8, strengthened and outfitted with a 3.0-liter Whipple supercharger. The engine sends power to the ground through a 9-inch solid rear axle, two-way coil-over shocks with adjustable ride height and a low-drag disc brake system from Strange Engineering, as well as a four-link rear suspension with antiroll and panhard bars.

“There are 68 future owners of the 50th Anniversary Mustang Cobra Jet, and Mickey Thompson is proud to deliver the high quality and performance they demand,” Wycoff added.

The 50th Anniversary Cobra Jet will be featured in the Ford booth (#22200) during SEMA 2018 on Tuesday, Oct. 30, before moving to the “Ford Out Front” display Wednesday through Friday for the remainder of the show.

Brian Deegan Ends His Season with a LOORRS Challenge Cup Win news/brian-deegan-ends-his-season-with-a-loorrs-challenge-cup-win 2018-10-26 With the season championships already decided, the final race day of the 2018 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series was all about Challenge Cup bragging rights, and Mickey Thompson-backed racer Brian Deegan walked away with the biggest win of them all.

Wrapping up the LOORRS Challenge Cup races at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona was the Pro 2 vs. Pro 4 shootout. Not surprisingly, the race came down to an epic final lap, with Deegan crossing the line first in his Pro 2 #38 Monster Energy/Mickey Thompson Toyota in front of newly crowned Pro 2 champion Rob MacCachren.

Deegan earned $30,000 for the victory, and MacCachren took home $15,000 for finishing second.

“What a great way to finish a tremendous LOORRS season,” said Ken Warner, Vice President of Marketing for Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels. “Congratulations to Brian for taking the win in the most exciting finish in Challenge Cup history, and to all of our Mickey Thompson-sponsored drivers for an incredible year of off-road competition.”

In the LOORRS Pro 2 vs. Pro 4 shootout, the four-wheel drives are given roughly a half-lap handicap, and this year both fields took the green flag from a standing start.

At the end of lap one, Deegan led the way over Pro 2 drivers Jeremy McGrath, RJ Anderson, MacCachren and Bradley Morris, while the top-five in Pro 4 were Adrian Cenni, Greg Adler, Kyle LeDuc, Doug Mittag and Randy Minnier.

After some terrific mid-race battles, with two laps to go the running order was Mittag, LeDuc, Deegan, MacCachren and Cenni. LeDuc then half-spun and shot into the infield at Turn 3, moving him back to fourth.

On what would have been the final lap, Cenni was stopped in Turn 3, which forced a full-course caution. Mittag, Deegan, MacCachren, LeDuc and McGrath lined up for a one-lap shootout with a rolling restart.

On the final lap, Adler got into LeDuc coming out of Turn 3 and drove up and over part of LeDuc’s hood, causing Adler to roll wildly. Then, in the final corner, Mittag suddenly lost power and rolled to a stop, mere seconds from the finish line.

Deegan and MacCachren swept past. MacCachren closed to within a half-car length, but on the final jump landed his right front tire on Deegan’s left bedside, allowing Deegan to drive to the win and a thrilling ending to the 10th LOORRS short-course season.

The Hardesty Dynasty news/the-hardesty-dynasty 2018-10-26 Mickey Thompson-sponsored racer Darren “Hot Sauce” Hardesty Jr. earned his third straight Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series Pro Buggy championship in style, finishing second in the final race of the year just behind Eliott Watson, his closest challenger in the season points race.

Not only is it three championships in a row for Hardesty, it’s also the fifth time a Mickey Thompson-backed competitor has earned top honors in the LOORRS Pro Buggy class.

“Congratulations once again to Darren ‘Hot Sauce’ Hardesty Jr. on earning his third straight Pro Buggy championship,” said Ken Warner, VP of Marketing for Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels. “It was a great season for the entire #99 team, and we’re proud to be part of such an amazing group.”

Just 13 points separated Hardesty Jr., driving the Bilstein Shock Absorbers/Steel-It Alumi Craft buggy, from Watson’s #3 Tom Watson Inc./BFGoodrich Tires Alumi Craft machine as they hit the track at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona.

Watson qualified second and Hardesty third, closing the season points gap to 12. Watson picked up another point on Hardesty Jr. for leading at the halfway point, as well as two more for finishing one spot ahead of Hardesty Jr. in the race, making the final difference just nine points.

First to 500: Turbinator II, equipped with Mickey Thompson tires, makes blistering 503-mph run at Bonneville news/first-to-500-turbinator-ii-equipped-with-mickey-thompson-tires-makes-blistering-503-mph-run-at-bonneville 2018-10-24 With a top speed of 503.334 mph, the Turbinator II is now the world’s fastest wheel-driven vehicle.

Featuring Mickey Thompson’s innovative land speed tires, the only tires on the market developed to accommodate its 5,000 horsepower engine, the Turbinator II is driven by a Lycoming T55 turbine engine from a CH-47 Chinook helicopter.

Unfortunately, Team Vesco’s history-making run wasn’t enough to land them in the official record books as land-speed records require the average of two runs. Inclement weather conditions prevented the crew from making a second pass and solidifying the official record.

“Ideal conditions at the Bonneville Salt Flats have made for the most exciting season of land speed racing we have seen in more than a decade,” Ken Warner, Vice President of Marketing for Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels said. “Danny Thompson’s record-breaking success during Speedweek and now Team Vesco’s incredible 500 mph run have made the 2018 season at Bonneville one for the record books.”

In August, Danny Thompson set the land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats after a two-way average run of 448.757 mph in the Challenger II, a racecar originally built by his father, Mickey Thompson, more than 50 years ago. Thompson’s run broke the 439-mph record held by George Poteet.

Following up on the initial truck tire courses, online training for Mickey Thompson’s street and drag tire lines are slated to launch in early 2019.

“Our online courses were created with our dealers in mind, giving them the opportunity to learn more about our company and our products” said Ken Warner, Vice President of Marketing for Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels. “These simple courses will ensure shops have the information needed to make them an expert on the features, benefits and fitments of each Mickey Thompson tire line.”

Following a simple log-in, dealers watch short videos outlining information about specific characteristics of the tires in question. Dealers progress through the training by correctly answering questions along the way.
